    Easy way to remember layers of OSI model

    My favorite way to remember all of the layers of the OSI model is to remember a funny phrase where the first letter of each word is the same first letter of each letter in the model. My favorite phrase is:
    Please Do Not Tell Stupid People Anything

    What is the OSI model?

    The OSI Model is a standard abstract way to break up communication responsibilities of physical network devices.

    Why do we need or want the OSI model?

    When networking first started, each company that manufactured networking equipment did it their own way. Because there wasn’t a standard, anyone who wanted to have a network needed all their network equipment to come from the same manufacture. It was also extremely difficult to get computers of different makes to work together because they would talk on the network differently. The OSI model was a way to standardize the way computers and network devices communicate so we could eventually have all different types of computers and devices talk to each other on the same network.

    How well do I really need to know and understand the OSI model?

    From what I have read and heard, it is really good to memorize the layers of the OSI model. Throughout the books I have been reading, each network device is referred to by what layer it functions on. I have also heard that in the networking world the OSI model is referenced all the time, so learn and memorize that OSI model!
